Strengthen and Protect

A dental crown is a permanent covering that fits over an original tooth when it’s decayed, damaged or cracked and a filling isn’t enough to repair it. It protects and strengthens the tooth and restores it to its natural appearance. Crowns are made from a variety of materials, including porcelain, gold, acrylic resin or a mix of materials. Whichever option you choose, at Naperville Dental Specialists, we’ll ensure your crown is functional and seamlessly blends in with the rest of your smile.

Treatment Considerations

The crown process typically takes two to three visits over three to four weeks. The procedure involves:

1

Numbing the tooth and removing decay in or around it.
2

Re-sculpting the tooth to provide the ideal fit for the crown.
3

Making an impression of your teeth to create your custom-made crown (it usually takes one to two weeks to be made). We use our iTero® scanner to take digital impressions, so there won’t be any goopy molds.
4

Making a temporary crown out of acrylic resin and fitting it onto the tooth to protect it while your permanent crown is being crafted.
5

Removing the temporary crown and fitting the permanent crown onto the tooth.
6

Cementing the crown into place after ensuring it has the proper look and fit.

When the procedure is finished, proper dental hygiene, including brushing and flossing daily, is necessary to maintain healthy, bacteria-free teeth and gums. When cared for properly, your crowns can last a lifetime.

Expert Guidance

There are a variety of factors that will help us determine the best choice of material (porcelain, gold, acrylic resin, etc.) for your crown. For example, while porcelain often looks the most natural, it may not be the most durable for teeth that withstand a lot of chewing forces on a daily basis. Your Naperville cosmetic dentist will give you expert advice to help you decide on the right solution for your needs and smile. Schedule an appointment today online or by calling us at (630) 848-2010 to learn about your options.
