Does the thought of undergoing a dental procedure make you panic or feel uneasy? You’re not alone. Dental anxiety isn’t uncommon and in severe cases, it can cause you to avoid getting necessary care, leading to tooth decay, gum disease, tooth loss, infection and pain. Past dental experiences, the nature of the treatment or hearing the experiences of others can lead to apprehension. If you’re having trouble overcoming your fear of the dentist, our caring team offers Naperville sedation dentistry. You’ll be able to relax completely during your appointment and, in many cases, leave with little or no memory of it.
What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry is a safe means of helping you deeply relax, so you can have a pleasant, painless, stress-free dental experience and receive the care you need. Depending on the case, we offer oral conscious sedation or general anesthesia, which is administered by a board-certified dental anesthesiologist. We use cutting-edge technology and sedation methods for maximum safety and effectiveness. You’ll be monitored throughout the treatment by our experienced anesthesiologist. In addition to giving you peace of mind and eliminating anxiety, sedation dentistry can allow you to receive multiple procedures in one appointment.
Types of Sedation Dentistry
Oral Conscious Sedation
With oral conscious sedation, you’ll be given a small amount of an oral medication commonly used to reduce anxiety. Depending on the dose required, you’ll experience minimal to moderate sedation. As the name suggests, you’ll be conscious and your reflexes will be intact, however, you’ll be extremely relaxed and comfortable during your dental treatment. Many patients even fall asleep and you may not remember much of the visit. We’ll monitor your vital signs throughout the procedure. After your treatment is complete, you’ll still be somewhat drowsy, so you’ll need to make arrangements in advance to have someone drive you home.
General Anesthesia
For more severe dental anxiety or for surgical procedures, general anesthesia may be indicated. General anesthesia is administered through an IV by a highly trained, board-certified anesthesiologist. During the procedure, you’ll be completely asleep and your vital signs will be monitored. You’ll be able to go home about two to four hours after your treatment. You won’t be able to drive, so you’ll have to make arrangements in advance for a ride.
