Preventing and Treating Tooth Decay

white-arc-bottom

As Naperville general dentists, we believe in the power of prevention when it comes to warding off tooth decay and maintaining excellent oral health. However, if you already have tooth decay, our goal is to intercept it early while treatment is easier, allowing us to preserve as much of your tooth’s natural structure as possible. In the prevention department, we offer dental sealants and we take the time to educate you on proper oral hygiene. If treatment is necessary, we use tooth-colored fillings that seamlessly blend in with your smile.

Dental Sealants

Dental sealants are thin plastic coatings that are applied to the molars. They’re one of the most effective ways to protect the fissures and pits in the teeth to keep bacteria and food particles out. Ideally, sealants should be applied as soon as possible after the molars first erupt. However, patients of all ages can benefit. The process is simple, painless and quick. The tooth surfaces are cleaned and then we apply a gel for a few seconds, clean it off and you’re done. Dental sealants can last from five to 10 years and should be checked at your regular dental appointment.

Tooth-Colored Fillings

Using the most advanced materials and techniques, we can quickly, painlessly and effectively treat cavities, cracks and fractures with tooth-colored fillings. A filling can help prevent further damage and the need for more invasive treatment like root canals or extractions. First, we remove the decay and after cleaning and priming the area, we fill in the space with a durable, aesthetic composite resin. We harden the material with a curing light, make adjustments for the ideal fit and bite and then polish your filling for a natural look. Our tooth-colored fillings will strengthen the tooth for optimal function and appearance. With good oral hygiene, fillings can last for many years.

Prevention at Home

Cavities, which are the end result of tooth decay, can occur on the smooth surfaces of your teeth, between your teeth and in the pits and grooves of your back chewing teeth. While brushing your teeth is essential, brushing alone will only protect the smooth surfaces. Now, add flossing once a day to your oral hygiene regimen and you can prevent decay between your teeth. So, how do you keep tooth decay from occurring in the pits and fissures? Dental sealants and limiting the number of times per day you eat and drink.

Each time you eat and drink, the bacteria in plaque react with the sugars and starches to produce an acid that attacks the surfaces of the teeth. To combat these acid attacks, your saliva has minerals in it that repair the damage. By limiting yourself to three meals a day and a few snacks, you give your mouth’s own natural defenses time to do this repair work. Snacking constantly or sipping on sugary drinks throughout the day, doesn’t give your saliva time to do its job and tooth decay is accelerated.
