Pain-Free Tooth Extractions

white-arc-bottom

Our Naperville general dentists and specialists always try to save our patients’ natural teeth. However, sometimes, that’s not possible, and a tooth has to be removed, or extracted, because of severe decay, disease, trauma, or in order to place a dental implant. While the idea of a tooth extraction can be intimidating, our experienced dentists are able to perform the procedure quickly, safely, and painlessly. We also offer sedation dentistry to help you overcome your dental anxiety and get the care you need. To learn more about your options for tooth extractions in Naperville, schedule a visit with us online or by calling us at (630) 848-2010.

Treatment Considerations

Wondering what to expect during dental extractions? We start by giving you an anesthetic to numb the tooth and surrounding area. If you have a lot of anxiety about the extraction, we can also administer sedation to ensure you’re completely relaxed.

Once you’re numb, your dentist will use a special instrument to rock the tooth and widen the socket, gently pulling it out. The only thing you’ll feel during the procedure is some pressure. When the tooth has been extracted, your dentist will clean the area. Occasionally, depending on which tooth was removed and the circumstances, a few sutures may be needed.

Since a missing tooth can cause the remaining teeth to shift, lead to jawbone deterioration, and create difficulty with chewing, we’ll discuss your tooth replacement options, including a dental bridge or dental implant.

Tooth Extractions Aftercare

It’s normal to have some minor swelling, bleeding, and discomfort after a tooth extraction. To control bleeding, fold gauze pads to create a thick surface to bite on. Put the pad on the extraction site and bite down firmly for about 15 to 30 minutes before checking to see if the bleeding has slowed down. Replace the gauze pads as necessary until the bleeding stops or is minimal.

If you’re experiencing pain, you can take an over-the-counter or prescribed pain reliever as needed. Holding an ice pack on your cheek in the area of the extraction can help with swelling. Be sure to continue to brush your teeth the day after the procedure, but avoid the extraction site for the first few days of healing. Stick with soft foods for a day or two, or until tenderness subsides.

If you have questions or the discomfort, swelling, or bleeding persists, contact our office and we’ll be more than happy to help and ensure your healing is on track.

Is a Tooth Extraction Right for Me?
