A temporomandibular disorder (TMD), also known as a temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJD), can cause jaw pain, discomfort and other symptoms. But did you know that TMD can also interfere with your sleep?

The subjects with chronic TMD also were more likely to have obstructive sleep apnea (OSA).

Sleep apnea occurs when the airway becomes obstructed during sleep, often due to the collapse of soft tissues in the throat, causing a temporary cessation of breathing. While TMD doesn’t directly cause sleep apnea, it can contribute to or exacerbate the condition.

A 2013 study in the Journal of Dental Research also found a “significant association” between OSA and TMD. Subjects with OSA were much more likely to develop TMD. More research needs to be done on causation but the link is there. This connection means that treating one condition often improves the other, leading to better sleep quality.

It’s thought that in an effort to compensate for the reduction in oxygen that occurs with OSA, patients may shift or clench their jaw and/or grind their teeth while sleeping, putting pressure on the TMJs and causing TMD.

In other cases, a structural issue, such as an underdeveloped upper jaw, leads to TMD and a narrow airway, resulting in OSA.

TMD can cause headaches and make it difficult to get comfortable, leading to frequent awakenings and unrestful sleep. Common signs that TMD or sleep apnea is affecting your sleep include:

  • Jaw pain or soreness upon waking

  • Snoring or waking up gasping for air
  • Daytime sleepiness even after a full night’s sleep
  • Irritability and difficulty concentrating

  2. Use a Supportive Pillow: A supportive pillow that keeps the head aligned with the spine can minimize jaw tension.
  3. Warm Compress Before Bed: Applying a warm compress to the jaw before bed can relax muscles and relieve TMJ pain.
  4. Wear a Custom Oral Appliance: Wearing a TMJ appliance supports the joints, promoting healing. There are also splints that address TMD and sleep apnea in one by shifting the jaw forward, which takes pressure off the joints and keeps the airway open.
